![]() And what a fortuitous sequence of events that proved to be, as the LP was to be one of the biggest successes of the band's tenure. Song: "Hotel California" Band: Eagles Album: Hotel California (1976) Rock Out: Eagles founding member Bernie Leadon had left the building by the time the album Hotel California debuted in 1976, while Joe Walsh was only just joining the outfit for the first time. The complex guitar sound and Vedder's intense delivery made for an iconic sound, and Mike McCready's Hendrix-tinged six-string solo stands as a perfect fit for Guitar Hero strummers and pickers everywhere. Song: "Alive" Band: Pearl Jam Album: Ten (1991) Rock Out: Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam's distinctive mix of alternative/grunge and rock first came to the attention of many soon-to-be-clad-in-flannel new fans in 1991 when "Alive," the debut single from their album Ten, was released. Would make for a great counterpoint to the band's Black Hole Sun, which is already available on GH's distinguished competition, Rock Band. Lyrically an environmental cautionary tale, the track works through an extended instrumental opening with Kim Thayil's guitars rising and falling on a one-note riff before Chris Cornell's howling vocals kick in for the evocative middle section. Song: "Hands All Over" Band: Soundgarden Album: Louder than Love (1989) Rock Out: Purveyors of the sound known as grunge, Soundgarden's heavy "Hands All Over" comes from their mainstream debut record for A&M, 1989's Louder than Love. With the typical wink, wink, nudge, nudge lyrics of Steven Tyler ("I'm calling all the shots tonight/I'm like a loaded gun/Peelin' off my boots and chaps/I'm saddle sore") and a hard but catchy rhythm section, it's no wonder that the song remains a band fave after all these years. Song: "Back in the Saddle" Band: Aerosmith Album: Rocks (1976) Rock Out: The highly influential Aerosmith LP Rocks is said to have inspired everyone from Slash to Kurt Cobain, and one of the key tracks on the record is "Back in the Saddle," the rough-around-the-edges-sounding lead guitar section of which was penned by Joe Perry on a six-string bass. ![]()
